History
In the middle age, the springs of Les Fumades were used for the treatment of injured animals. Because of the good results, the Romans became interested and exploited the waters. Different types of remains testify their presence. It seems that Julius Caesar was treated for scabies.
In 1845 the spring « Justet » was exploited in a more organized way. In 1875, Dr L.E. Perrier ran the spring water business « Etienne », which he sold to buy the « Bouillens » which are known today as the « Source Perrier » in Vergèze.
Before 1900 the waters of the springs « Zoë » and « Romaine » were bottled and sold in chemists and by retailers for mineral waters.
In 1907, a « Development Company Limited» was established in London and registered at the stock exchange. German money was invested in the development of the spa. People from Germany came to take the waters. Amongst others, a house was built in a baroque style to welcome Wilhelm 2nd for treatment.
The two wars stopped its development and the proprietors changed at different times.
Today, it welcomes patients suffering from skin and respiratory diseases as well as from rheumatism. It also proposes different treatments for health, well-being and beauty. The commune, in cooperation with public and private investors, is developing a project with the ambition to enlarge the activities of the spa.
